Research shows that a child will engage most strongly with a book that he or she has chosen for themselves.
The Kiwanis Club of Cicero’s “Books For A Bright Future” Program
The Goal: Give every elementary school age student of our Hamilton Heights School District two books.
Book ownership has been directly linked with improved mental health among children, a greater propensity to read for pleasure, while reading fluency itself is tied directly to academic achievement and lifetime outcomes.
Books For A Bright Future has two phases: Provide free, age-appropriate books to elementary school students at the two annual Scholastic Book Fairs and provide books for the school district’s bookmobile that travels the district during the summer months to keep kids engaged in reading throughout summer break.
There are approximately 850 elementary school students and the average price of a book through the Scholastic Publishing Company is $4.99. If each student were to get a free book at both book fairs the total cost would be $8,500 (850 students X $5 per book = $4,250 X 2 = $8,500). The Summer Bookmobile averages 150 visits over the course of the 3-month break. Each student that visits would be able to choose 2 books to keep as their own totaling $1,500. (150 students X $5 per book X 2 visits=$1,500).
The yearly cost of this program is $10,000.
We are excited to announce that the Kiwanis Children’s Fund · an important initiative of Kiwanis International · has granted us $4,000 for this program!
